Oakleigh Warriors

The Oakleigh Basketball Association has enjoyed a long history in the sport in Victoria.Established in the early 1980’s it operated from the Oakleigh Recreation Centre until it moved into GESAC in 2012. Upon making this move, the OBA or as they were more commonly known from 2010 the Oakleigh Warriors grew substantially. On the verge of going out of existence in 2010, the Warriors turned around their fortunes with their move into the GESAC facility. All of a sudden the OBA could manage, promote and administer their own domestic competitions. More importantly, they had full control over their finances and revenue and could dictate a profit from that revenue.

On the playing side, the club formed and grew its domestic competitions where they grew from no domestic competitions in 2011 to fielding close to 100 domestic teams in competitions covering juniors boys, junior girls and open age competitions.

The club from 2010 also fielded representative teams in the VJBL competitions and in 2013, 2014 and 2015 competed in the BIG V competitions through their BIG V Men’s team.

In their six years between 2010 and 2016, the Warriors had six teams qualify for Victorian Championships, the State’s top level of club competition. Of those six teams, three teams made the State’s top ten. In that period, the club also won two VJL1 titles, two VJL2 titles and a host of regional and tournament titles.

Disappointingly this was all torn down due t the sad events between September and December 2016. The club now has a hard-working group of people looking to resurrect the club back to its previous levels. The Community Forum online newspaper is glad to support the Warriors in this effort.
